Somewhere around 7th grade I thought I should become a comic book guy. I had a friend who was big into (an unknown to me hero) Iron Man. In the years since I've always wondered how he felt about the Robert Downey Jr-ification of the franchise.
If I was going to become a comic book guy I needed to choose some heroes that I would be equally dedicated to. I landed on Batman and X-Men.
Batman was the safe play. The monoculture was alive and well and we were in a post Keaton/Nicholson/Burton landscape. Additionally I had watched a healthy amount of the Adam West's Batman so this was a lateral move.
X-Men was something new… The art was both angular and smooth. Dirty and clean. Everything seemed a bit more confusing to my 12 year old self. I’ve not been the most faithful X-Men fan, but I have returned to the franchise regularly. So when I recently found a DVD set of “X-Men The Animated Series” at a garage sale I knew that it would be a solid purchase. I can also say that DVD set provided the origin story for this mixtape.
